All About Essential Oils: What, Why, and How?
Essential oils are compounds derived from parts of plants found in nature like flowers, stems, bark, seeds, and roots. Many plants from which essential oils are extracted are plants also commonly found in the kitchen like basil, marjoram, grapefruit, and cinnamon. Essential oils give plants their distinct aromas, like the sweet smell of a rose bush or the tangy scent of ginger. They also offer the plants certain protections against predators in nature and assist plants with the pollination process. Humans have been utilizing essential oils in food preparation, health care practices, and beauty regimens for ages.
Today, the various beneficial properties of essential oils have been harnessed, bottled, and labeled for our convenience and well-being. Each oil lends its own unique combinations of physical and emotional wellness benefits. For example, some essential oils like bergamot and lavender are used for their calming aromas which help reduce stress and tension. Others like grapefruit and lime invigorate and energize with their distinct aromas. Several essential oils can be used to enhance your plan for pain management with pain reducing properties. Basil, cypress, eucalyptus, marjoram, and white fir all help to reduce pain caused by tired, tense, sore, or achy muscles. In addition, cinnamon bark and vetiver both promote circulation, helping to reduce pain caused by inflammation or swelling. Essential oils not only help to improve mood and reduce pain they can also improve the immune system, settle stomach aches, aid with digestion, detox the body, balance hormones, promote clear breathing, clear skin, and cleanse the air.
Depending on the type of essential oil and the desired benefit, it will be recommended to be used one of three ways: aromatically, topically, or internally. Aromatic application of an essential oil requires the use of a diffuser, which works similarly to a cold air humidifier or nebulizer. A few drops of the essential oil are added to water and then diffused into the air to be breathed in. This application is often recommended for essential oils meant to alter mood, improve focus, or to purify the air. First usually diluted in a carrier oil solution of coconut oil in order to make the essential oil safe and gentle on skin, topical application of oils is often used for pain relief. For internal use, a few drops of essential oil are administered orally. This application is regularly used for digestion, detoxification, and immune health. Essential oils can be used singularly or in blends like doTERRA’s Deep Blue, On Guard, or Zendocrine.
